Frequently Asked Questions

  • Therapy can provide you with a number short-term and long lasting benefits. Therapists provide an objective perspective on challenges you’re currently facing to support you with managing difficult emotions, developing more meaningful relationships, and replace maladaptive behavioral patterns with more healthy / constructive alternatives. The benefits you obtain from therapy really depend on how you engage in the process and consistently put into practice what you have learned.

  • Our initial session will be an opportunity to get to understand your concerns, establish needs you’d like to address in therapy, and explore what you’ve done to manage your mental health in the past. You’ll find yourself talking about current challenges and symptoms, along with your relationships, strengths, and potential goals.

Sessions thereafter will be different depending on the individual since each person has unique issues and goals for therapy. In general, you can expect to process current events in your life, discuss personal history relevant to your concerns, and any progress or insights gained from the previous session.

Remember, the ultimate purpose of therapy is to help you bring what you’ve learned in session back into your daily life. In addition to being an active participant in therapy sessions, there may be suggestions for things you can do outside of therapy to support your mental health journey such as reflective journaling, mindfulness techniques, and more.

  • Sessions are typically 45 minutes long and are usually scheduled on a weekly basis, especially in the beginning. Most people have been struggling to deal with challenging situations by the time they come to therapy and weekly sessions are great with helping you feel motivated and purposeful to work towards your goals effectively. As therapy progresses, we will work together to determine if weekly sessions continue to be beneficial. The frequency of sessions can be adjusted in order to best meet your needs throughout your healing journey.

  • Walk and Talk therapy differs from normal therapy sessions in that you and the therapist will interact while walking outside. This alternative approach has proven researched benefits including a reduction in stress, anxiety, and depression, along with increasing circulation and cardiovascular health when done consistently. These sessions are also useful for those who are looking to make impactful lifestyle changes. For instance, the simple act of walking may encourage you to incorporate more healthy practices into your daily routine.

Walking sessions require an intake therapy session conducted online prior to beginning. Please note that these sessions are not covered by insurance. Sessions are $175 out of pocket and a bill can be provided for reimbursement to submit to your insurance provider.

  • Therapy is confidential and therapists are bound by laws and ethics to maintain client confidentiality to the best of their ability. This means that information about your counseling is not shared with anyone without expressed written permission by you. However, there are some exceptions required by law to this rule where the therapist is required to report certain information which include:

    • If there is the possibility of serious and foreseeable harm to the client or another person, or in cases of child or elder abuse

Unless it is one of the specific circumstances in which exceptions to confidentiality exists, you will be asked to sign a release of information form before any information is shared. This may include sharing diagnoses with your insurance company to cover the cost of services or sharing information with other practitioners, like physicians, in order to help provide you with the best possible care.
